The Department of Zoology at North Bengal St. Xavier’s College (NBXC), established in 2010, offers a comprehensive undergraduate program in Zoology under the University of North Bengal. The department aims to provide students with a deep understanding of animal biology, behavior, physiology, and ecology, preparing them for careers in research, conservation, education, and various public services.
NBXC offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Major in Zoology, allowing students to choose electives in Botany or Chemistry. The curriculum is designed to cover key areas such as animal anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, genetics, behaviour, and ecology, fostering critical thinking and scientific inquiry. The department also emphasizes effective communication skills, essential for presenting scientific findings and collaborating in the field of zoology.

Zoology is a prominent discipline in the realm of biological sciences. The treasure trove of animal species in every possible ecosphere of this planet and the plethora of knowledge about the survival strategies of each one of them offer a vast opportunity to its pupils to learn and explore life in and out of the confinement of a classroom or a laboratory.
The four year undergraduate programme in zoology is neatly crafted with ample opportunities of insightful learning of how life operates from micro to macro level and the department is equipped enough to corroborate with the objective of the programme to bolster a student to persuade and achieve in the field of advanced academics, research, cutting-edge technologies, field expeditions etc. The department regularly organizes extracurricular activities like seminars, workshops, special lectures, panel discussions to accentuate the focus of its young students towards skill development. Nature appreciation through excursions to different nooks and corners of the country has always been an integral essence of the undergraduate programme where students contract different ecosystems, animal behaviours, biodiversity, bio-entrepreneurship farms, research institutes etc.
Since 2010, the department has produced quite a sizable number of alumni and many of them have succeeded in obtaining faculty positions in higher education institutes and fellowships in research institutes in India and abroad, cracked civil service exams and other government sector competitive exams.
I believe the Dept. of Zoology in NBSXC will continue with its legacy of catering the best education to its students and keep extracting best of them in academics. I wish all the very best to all the past, present and would be stakeholders of the department.
