The Department of Chemistry at North Bengal St. Xavier’s College, Rajganj, was established on 17th June 2009 (Session: 2009–2010) with the introduction of the B.Sc. General course in Chemistry, offering quality education and academic promise. Under the present Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), the Department offers Chemistry as a minor subject, fostering a dynamic and interactive learning environment. We aim to instill strong foundational knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and an innovative approach through a balanced blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on laboratory experience. Our mission is to nurture scientific temper, encouraging life-long learning and meaningful contributions to science and society, within a student-focused and career-oriented framework.
The Chemistry Laboratory is well-equipped, spanning an area of approximately 842 sq. ft., and houses essential chemicals, standard glassware, and a range of instruments such as pH meters, electronic digital balances, common balances, hot plates, magnetic stirrers, melting point apparatus, conductivity meters, and potentiometers. The Departmental Seminar Library features a collection of around 70 reference books available for student use. Additionally, students have access to the Central Library, which contains approximately 406 books covering various branches of Chemistry—including Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Analytical, and Industrial Chemistry—along with specialized fields such as Surfactant Science, Polymer Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Medicinal Chemistry.
As the molecular foundation of science, Chemistry plays a crucial role in bridging various scientific disciplines. It enhances our understanding of both the physical and biological worlds and serves as a core component of interdisciplinary sciences. Chemistry is essential to the advancement of knowledge and innovation across fields such as Pharmacology, Materials Science, Biochemistry, and Environmental Science. Pursuing Chemistry as a minor subject under the FYUGP not only complements the major disciplines of Bio-Science and Pure Science within the B.Sc. degree but also enriches students with the analytical skills and scientific aptitude required for interdisciplinary research and diverse career opportunities.
Objectives
Ensures Quality Education: To provide a comprehensive treatment of theoretical and practical knowledge, covering fundamental concepts to more advanced topics such as Green Chemistry, Quantum Chemistry, Coordination Chemistry, Biochemistry, Colloid Science, etc., assuring a solid background for understanding chemical science.
Fosters Intellectual Growth: To create an atmosphere that encourages critical questioning, accuracy, and moral responsibility, instilling a sense of continuous intellectual adventure and a profound sense of rationality of chemical reactions/processes and technology.
Develops Core Skills: To provide adaptable qualities for a variety of professional fields by strengthening students with analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through meticulous precision and ingenuity.
Highlights Interdisciplinary Scope: To support students in exploring subject concepts across a variety of domains—including materials science, biotechnology, medicine, and environmental science to demonstrate the prospect of chemistry in tackling real problems.
Instills Ethical & Sustainable Practice (Green Chemistry): Ethical & Sustainable Practices are seeded within the students by imparting knowledge on how to develop chemical processes with minimized hazards, resource conservation, and contribute to the sustainable growth of the country.
Prepares for Professional Success: To improve societal contributions, students are given the tools they need for a variety of vocations in R&D, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, environmental protection, and academia.
