Department of English

Established in 2007, the Department of English at North Bengal St. Xavier’s College offers a diverse range of learning opportunities in its Undergraduate (ENGLISH HONS./MAJOR) program. With a student-centric and value-integrated teaching approach, the department equips students with linguistic skills ranging from basic comprehension and communication to advanced literary, critical, and theoretical analyses. It actively engages students through various departmental activities, including international conferences, webinars, national seminars, special talks, poetry recitation competitions, literary quizzes, film screenings, and entrance exam preparation classes (CUET/NET/SET). The department boasts an active Literary Association and spearheads a college Book Club, while student progress is regularly monitored through periodic tests, discussions, and mentoring. Individual counseling on academic and personal matters is also prioritized. Graduates of the program have diverse career prospects, including teaching English at the secondary level or as a foreign language, working in the publishing sector as proofreaders, editors, writers, or reviewers, and exploring opportunities in digital media, content creation, social media management, journalism, and public relations. Careers in mass communication, marketing research, educational consultancy, lexicography, and civil services are also viable pathways, as a strong command of English language and literature provides a competitive edge. Additionally, the department offers Minor, AEC (Alternative & Compulsory English), LCC, and other allied courses to enhance students’ academic and professional growth.

Mission

“In line with the Jesuit tradition of holistic excellence, the Department of English is dedicated to creating and nurturing a dynamic, intellectual, and reflective community of English language learners and literary enthusiasts who contribute to knowledge generation and academic excellence. It aims to prepare students, researchers, and professionals to become responsible leaders committed to knowledge dissemination and social empowerment. The department actively engages with diverse educational communities and institutions at local, national, and global levels through academic initiatives such as seminars, conferences, special talks, and lectures, fostering value-based learning, critical understanding, and affective maturity. Additionally, it strives to cultivate outstanding leaders in academic, professional, and social spheres, setting new benchmarks in community development and nation-building.”

Objectives

Objectives

The primary objective of the English Department (NBSXC) is to inculcate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of emerging trends in language and literature studies, enhance communication skills, and prepare students for academic research or careers that require proficiency in English. The department strives to provide its students with a detailed understanding of literary and linguistic terms and concepts, including rhetoric and prosody, textual interpretations, and critical as well as theoretical analyses.

The ultimate objective of the department, therefore, is to narrow the gulf between academic excellence and professional competence by following a teaching-learning approach which is contextual, critical, and comprehensive. The department aims at encouraging and equipping its students to pursue higher studies at the master’s and doctoral levels through research-oriented activities and in professional fields, which can well contribute to the development of society and in nation-building.
