Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology was established in July 2007 and it is affiliated to the University of North Bengal providing B.A programme under the FYUGP System. After its inception it has produced eleven university toppers. Sociology is the discipline which addresses the concerns of heterogeneous society which is constantly changing.  It helps in understanding the society, social relationship, social behaviour, social institutions and social changes in a better way. The Department recognizes the importance of disseminating sociological knowledge and research and organizes departmental seminars, workshops, project tours, special lectures, field studies, interactive group discussions on various topics related with social, cultural, economic and political issues relevant for the students and the community as a whole.

The Department of Sociology at North Bengal St. Xavier’s College is dedicated to fostering a deep understanding of society, culture and human behaviour through critical thinking and research. The department strives to equip students with analytical skills necessary to address pressing social issues, promote inclusivity, and contribute meaningfully to the world around them. With a strong emphasis on inter-disciplinary learning, faculty members engage in diverse research areas, offering students a rich academic experience.
