The Department of Geography at North Bengal St. Xavier’s College, Matigara, was established in 2007 with a vision to impart quality education in geographical studies. The department began its journey with just 10 students, and over the years, it has grown significantly, now boasting an intake capacity of 40 students for the B.A./B.Sc. Major and Minor Course in Geography.
Our department is committed to providing a dynamic and comprehensive learning experience that blends theoretical knowledge with practical applications. With four dedicated faculty members, we focus on fostering spatial awareness, environmental consciousness, and analytical skills among students. Through field studies, GIS applications, and research-oriented teaching, we strive to prepare students for academic excellence and professional success in diverse geographical fields.
The department continues to evolve, keeping pace with modern advancements in geography while maintaining a strong foundation in both physical and human geography. We aim to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to address contemporary global and regional challenges in environment, urban planning, sustainability, and more.
The Geography program (Major and Minor) at North Bengal St. Xavier’s College aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the physical and human landscapes of the Earth. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the subject fosters spatial awareness, environmental consciousness, and analytical skills to interpret geographical phenomena. The curriculum is designed to:

Welcome to the Department of Geography at North Bengal St. Xavier’s College.
We take immense pride in sharing the journey of our department, which began in 2007 with the introduction of the Pass Course. Recognizing the growing interest and demand for the subject, we introduced the Honours Course the following year. Over the years, our department has grown, and we now have an intake capacity of 40 students per year.
Our students have excelled in various fields, securing placements in colleges, schools, and different private sectors. Many of them have also become renowned experts in Remote Sensing and GIS, contributing to both government and private organizations. Presently, we offer a four-year B.A./B.Sc. Undergraduate Course, following the latest academic framework (FYUGP). To support our students’ learning, we have a well-equipped GIS lab and Geography lab with modern instruments. Our team of four dedicated faculty members goes the extra mile to ensure students receive the best academic guidance. We provide tutorial and remedial classes, in addition to regular lectures, to enhance students’ understanding and academic performance.
