Department of History

The Department of History was established in the year 2007. The history of this department is indeed decked with the contribution of many academicians, teachers, students, administration and others. In its syllabus, the department has well-drawn specializations pertaining to the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary periods. For about eighteen years, this department has produced able students, researchers, teachers, and a number of academicians who are working in various capacities far and wide of our country. The department offers Under Graduation (both Major and Minor Courses) in History, covering various aspects of Indian and world history.

The department has a well- stocked Seminar Library, and a dedicated and experienced teachers (at present the department is staffed by Samar Chakrabarti, H.O.D, Sumita Roy Choudhury and Priya Ekka). The department organizes special lectures, seminars, workshops, and remedial classes for the students. The department also conducts Study Tour twice a year for the students under Skill Enhancement Course. The department aims to impart historical knowledge and skills to the students to develop their analytical abilities, in order to inspire the students to pursue higher studies and research in history.

“The vision is to make the students more rounded persons through study of History. History deals with how past societies, systems, ideologies, cultures and government, science and technologies were built, how they operated, and how have they changed. All these knowledge makes the history students better prepared to learn in all their academic subjects. Students are coming from different parts of the states and the country because of the diverse content and scope of learning in History. This enlarges the vision of the department. Since the department’s inception, the teachers tried to their utmost satisfaction to impart quality education to uplift the human ethics of the students and prepare them for higher studies.”

“Developing knowledge of the students in History means to develop their knowledge in different aspects of life. Students can learn about the pillars upon which different civilization were built including cultures and people different from their own. This will help them to become not only good citizens, but also form excellent leaders in them for service of humanity and transformation of the society and nation building. In view of above-mentioned words, the department works as a team and strives to provide all necessary knowledge through both traditional means of chalk-board and the use of modern means of audio- visual classes. The department follows the concrete schedule of learning and practicing throughout the three/four years academic life of the students and by the end of these years the students receive the good basis of the subject.’

The main objective of the History Department (NBSXC) is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the processes and patterns of human development over time. The course is designed to:

Develop a Critical Understanding of the Past: Equip students with the analytical tools necessary to interpret historical events, trends, and narratives from multiple perspectives using both primary and secondary sources. Foster an Appreciation for Heritage and Diversity: Cultivate a deep appreciation of India’s rich cultural and historical legacy, while promoting respect for global historical traditions and civilization diversity. Promote Historical Inquiry and Research Skills: Encourage the use of historical methods and historiographical debates to engage in independent research and evidence-based argumentation. Understand Socio-Political and Economic Processes: Analyze the interconnectedness of political, economic, social, and cultural factors in shaping historical developments at the regional, national, and global levels.

The Department encourages and equips   students to Prepare for Professional and Academic Pursuits: Lay a strong foundation for careers in education, civil services, journalism, heritage management, archival studies, and for pursuing higher education and research in history and related disciplines.

Dear Students, Faculty, and Well-Wishers,

Our History Department (North Bengal St. Xavier’s College) aims to promote the study and appreciation of the rich and diverse history of India and the world, with a special focus on the historical and cultural heritage of our North Bengal. The department strives to provide quality education and research opportunities to the students and faculty, and to engage with the local community through various outreach programs. The department also wants to reach out pupils through various survey programs like Student Satisfaction Survey program, so that more students can access and appreciate it. 

The department believes that studying history can help students develop a spirit of inquiry and social responsibility, and also prepare them for their future careers in various fields. To achieve this vision, the department follows a syllabus that reflects the richness of India’s past and its historical links with the world; second, it teaches the syllabus to students in an engaging and effective way; again, the department encourages students to actively participate in study tours and seminars, where they can learn from experts and can get a first- hand experience of the past; and mainly, it supervises students in report-writing and difficult projects, so that the department can contribute to the advancement of historical research.
